Dear Family and Friends:
I apologize it has been awhile since my last post. It has been a very busy month at school. I am finally having the opportunity to write a blog about our school. Being that that Twin Hills School is one of the 60 something schools that could potentially close, I would like to share pictures and hope that we can get more people from the Lower 48 to like on Facebook #small schools matter to show support for our students.
Twin Hills Mascot- Wolf. Our current school building is the third school building. When school started in Twin Hills, it was held in a Church. Later Twin Hills school building was near the current school. Unfortunately the school had burned down, thankfully it was not during school hours. Today students are enjoying the school building with modern day heating system and internet.

Every morning students walk through the door ready to go to school. They sit in the gym for breakfast sharing hunting stories, berry picking adventures, visiting their Grandparents, or taking a boat ride to Togiak across the river. Then the students proceed with their learning day. At recess you will often find the students playing kickball, playing tag, or sliding across on the bar (they call it the "roller coaster".
Our students have a successful learning environment in that the class sizes are smaller so that the teachers can meet each child's educational needs. Each student is known by name and their personal interests. Students get to walk to school everyday without the concerns of road traffic or school buses running late.

Besides the Twin Hills Council, Twin Hills School provides a place of community gathering for all the residents of the village. There is gym night at our school Monday through Thursdays at school. There is a time for the students to play in the gym and another time for the adults to come to the school to have an outlet outside of their house. Every Friday night Meghan Redmond, the school Principal provides "Movie Night". The gym turns into a movie theater where everyone from the village is invited to come watch a movie on the "big screen" an enjoy the snacks and drinks that we sell. The money from those snacks goes towards the 8th grade field trip which this year will be to Hawaii.
There is always something going on at our school. Meghan has a book club once a month that encourages family to read series books together. She and the 8th grade class get together every few weeks to make donuts or "fried bread" that is sold to everyone in the village. Trust me, the donuts go fast here! When people know donuts are for sale, phone calls come in for requests. The money goes to the 8th grade field trip.
We had a great Halloween party on Saturday night filled with games, a costume contest, and a cake walk. It was great to see family and friends come together and the children enjoy the festivities. Our school is also the community meeting place for holidays: Thanksgiving and Christmas potlucks. We even host a Christmas program.
Even though we are a small school and village, the school provides a place of meeting and unity for our community. It is a place where students not only learn the typical subjects, but a place where they can learn and take pride in their cultural heritage. The students have spent most of their lives here and there are some parents who grew up and went to school here. They may have moved to other villages, but they always return to Twin Hills.
I am praying and hoping our school along with the 60 other small schools have the opportunity to stay open next school year.

Until next time!
