Twin Hills~ Ingricuar
Hello Lower 48! I know it has been some time since I last blogged. Since the last blog I have been busy with school and Cassie has been enjoying roaming the countryside. We have had sunshine and rain. Up the river on the first day of Fall they even had snow which only stuck for about a day.
The month of September is the month that the Moose sheds the velvet off their antlers, as if they are shedding off Summer. One of the things that we teach in school are the Yup'ik values. For the month of September the value is: "Be helpful to others!" Stay tuned for October's value of the month!
I do love the concept of living off the land. It is free and definitely beats the prices of Whole Foods Market or Fresh Market! I have been blessed to receive fresh salmon and moose meat. I think I should have enough to get me through the winter!
One of the things Cassie and I like to do is walk behind the airport and go berry picking! Maggie seems to know when we are going because she magically appears and I firmly believe this tundra dog keeps an eye out on Cassie and me. My first time berry picking, I went with some of my students. Their excitement was contagious and they were so excited to point out the "jackpot" of berries! This time of year the cranberries are in season.
Cassie and Maggie were so helpful in finding the cranberry patches!
2 students have a special berry picking scooper that has prongs to help sift out the leaves! (Picture above)
Cassie and I have also been witnessing beautiful sunrises and sunsets frequently! Cassie and I are also having to adjust to a little less sunlight. We are morning risers but the sun is not quite over the horizon when we go for our morning walks before I go to work. Soon Cassie and I will be wearing flash lights to see where we are going. I have been told that the shortest day will have 5 hours of light!
The pictures above are from different mornings from August to September about 7:30 each morning. Below are pictures from August to September sunsets.
One of the things I have really enjoyed about being in Twin Hills so far is the tranquility and that everyday when Cassie and I walk the sky is never the same. There is always something magnificent about the view!
We have been having some dense fog the past two days which makes traveling by air taxi a bit of a challenge. Thankfully I have not had the need to travel by plane. Here are some pictures of Alaskan Fall foliage:)
Next weekend I am hoping to learn how to weave with grass and getting a history lesson about Twin Hills! Soon I will be learning to make kuspuk (Yup'ik qaspeq). Until next time friends!
